URW Geometric typeface has been extended with 50% off until 30th December

The extended font includes ten weights, ranging from Thin to Black, plus ten additional oblique styles, making it extremely versatile. The optically balanced styles are designed to work in harmony together: The extreme light styles are particularly engaging in large sizes, the middle weights are perfect for body copy, while the bolder variants are ideal for the use of emphasis, bringing a strong impact to headlines and information.

Jörn Oelsner, the designer of the typeface says: “Some of the original typefaces of the 1920s still remain very popular, for example, Futura, but within the last 90 years font technology and printing techniques have developed. My goal with the URW Geometric font was to design a contemporary sans serif version which takes these developments into consideration.”

With a wide Latin language support and character sets, URW Geometric is functional, strong, simple and harmonized in form and appears modern, despite its origins in 1920s design. Its character shapes have optimized proportions and the x-height is increased, while ascenders and descenders are decreased. Special glyphs, which were often designed afterwards for the original geometric typefaces from the 1920s, have been perfectly integrated and designed with today’s needs in mind. For example the email glyph looks modern and unique, with perfectly balanced spacing. The numero sign, in modern use called “hashtag”, is space saving and optically balanced for body text. Additionally, various extra and alternate glyphs are included for ease of use.

URW Geometric Extended is available on special offer until 30th December 2016. Buy it from the URW++ font shop at: https://www.urwpp.de/shop/

Clive Ayling, Meteor’s managing director said, “Meteor has an established record of success in delivering robust and reliable printhead driving solutions for a myriad of applications.  Global Graphics values this success and recognizes the importance of our independence in delivering the diverse range of solutions our customers require.  We are looking forward to working with Global Graphics to accelerate the growth of our business whilst we continue to deliver the world-class products and support that our customers have come to expect.”

Rob Day, TTP’s head of print technology said, “having nurtured Meteor through its initial technology and IP development phase into a mature and profitable business, we are delighted to see it become a subsidiary of Global Graphics. There is immense strategic synergy between the two companies. This will allow the Meteor team to broaden its offering to existing customers, and accelerate the acquisition of new ones. TTP’s Print Technology Division will continue to develop novel printing systems and print technology, and looks forward to working with Meteor’s products in future systems integration projects.”

Consideration for the acquisition is £1.2 million in cash followed by a maximum deferred consideration of £3.6 million.  The deferred consideration is payable in cash and is contingent on revenue during the ten year period from 6 December 2016 until 31 December 2026.

For the year ended 31 March 2016, Meteor generated sales of £2.5 million and a loss before tax of £0.2 million.  For the eight months ended 25 November 2016 Meteor’s management accounts showed sales of £2.5 million and a profit before tax of £0.3 million.  The acquisition is expected to be earnings enhancing in the financial year ending 31 December 2017.

Global Graphics chairs new ISO task force for PDF workflow

A new ISO task force has set to work on producing a PDF standard to guide production workflow decisions and will make it possible to describe what a final printed piece is supposed to look like.

The new task force is being chaired by Global Graphics’ CTO Martin Bailey and has been formed in response to requests from transactional printers to be able to include media selections and simplex/duplex controls in a PDF file.

When the PDF/VT Competence Center in the PDF Association reviewed this request they concluded that the benefits of a suitable solution would apply across the entire printing industry, not just in variable data applications.

Martin Bailey comments, “the new standard will enable graphic designers, file creators and buyers to describe how their final work should look without having to specify the details of the processes required to make it. The thought process is that the digital front end (DFE) on a digital press can map from that to the actual steps needed.

“As a simple example, a request for a specific substrate should be fairly easy to map to an entry in the media library in a DFE and therefore to tray selections (on a sheet-fed press) and to installing the correct ICC color profile. In closed loop workflows such as web to print the first mapping shouldn’t be necessary at all, because the media selection will be pre-populated from the same data as the media library.

“Our first goal is a standard for graphic arts, but there has already been discussion of following on with equivalents targeted more specifically at packaging and at wide format. If you’re interested in getting involved please contact your national standards body and tell them you want to work in ISO TC130/WG2/TF5. If you don’t know who to contact in your country, drop me a line and I’m happy to make introductions.”

Global Graphics appoints Jeremy Spencer VP of print sales

Global Graphics SE (Euronext: GLOG), a leading developer of software platforms used to create digital printing and document solutions, has appointed Jeremy Spencer as VP of print sales.

Mr Spencer has over 20 years’ experience in commercial printing, digital imaging and industrial inkjet including positions at Caldera, XaarJET and X-Rite.

He started his career at Grosvenor (Northampton Ltd), a full service photography, design and print agency, working in graphic design and then reprographics, before joining X-Rite, an industry leader in colour management and on press color control systems, initially as applications specialist and then taking a commercial role as technical sales EMEA.

At XaarJET, the industrial print head manufacturer, Jeremy spent four years as account manager for Europe before founding his own consultancy business in 2010,  specialising in inkjet market analysis and project management. This led to a close working relationship with Caldera where he was latterly OEM director Europe and Americas.

On joining Global Graphics Mr Spencer said, “Throughout my career in print, I have always challenged myself to be involved in state-of–the-art disruptive technologies for both traditional and ‘new to me’ print sectors. Global Graphics, being a well-respected technology provider that shares my passion for print, is a natural progression for me, particularly as the workflow environment is becoming more and more intelligent, powerful and automated, and the role of software is increasing in importance.”

Mr Spencer reports to Justin Bailey, Global Graphics’ VP of Sales who commented” I am delighted that Jeremy has joined us.  His knowledge and experience of digital printing and inkjet applications will assist us to grow our business further into those segments.”

Global Graphics debuts Fundamentals for label and packaging presses at Label Expo Americas

A new software and engineering service for labels and packaging presses will be on show at Label Expo Americas (Stand 5931) following the resounding success of its introduction at drupa by Global Graphics Software.

Called Fundamentals, the service provides inkjet press manufacturers with a single source for the key software components and engineering knowhow that are essential to building a digital front end to drive a press.  The goal is to help to reduce time to market and engineering costs by breaking through the common barriers that prevent manufacturers from getting out to market on time and on budget.

Crucially, Fundamentals can also be applied to existing presses to overcome common quality issues, such as poor quality barcodes or small text, or, defects caused by mottling and chaining, irrespective of other software choices that may have been made.

It provides manufacturers with an alternative to an Esko workflow or can be used alongside an Esko RIP.

“We’ve been working with several manufacturers who are pushing the boundaries of inkjet technology as they bring new presses to market,” says Martin Bailey, CTO, Global Graphics Software. “We’ve created Fundamentals to respond to the problems they face in the development phase of a new press which they often can’t solve on their own.  We can step in and help them out with our combination of best of breed software and our new BreakThrough Engineering Service. The goal is to breakthrough every technical barrier, accelerating the press to market.”

Eric Worrall, who heads up the Global Graphics’ BreakThrough team says “Every press, every application and every operating environment is different.  We work side by side with the manufacturer to create a solution that is truly customized to their press.  In doing so we give the manufacturer access to our tools and a unique pool of print scientists and engineers with decades of specialist knowledge exactly when they need them.”

“Recently we’ve been working on solutions for cross head calibration, ink estimation, even controlling the beta test environment”, he continues. “We can even help out when manufacturers are using a DFE with a different RIP to Harlequin.”

Fundamentals includes best of breed software from other vendors and marks the start of closer collaboration between Global Graphics Software and HYBRID Software, both of which share the same chairman in Guido Van der Schueren.

Fundamentals creates a much broader software offering alongside a RIP – it can include the Harlequin RIP®, but doesn’t need to – and is Global Graphics’ response to the many press vendors who are looking for the optimal choice of software components to drive their inkjet presses.  A key ingredient is the BreakThrough Engineering Service provided by Global Graphics color scientists, screening experts and RIP technologists.  They provide the integration services that link Fundamentals together.

The full line-up is: Label Layout Station for estimating and planning; CLOUDFLOW Fundamentals file and job management system; Harlequin RIP® to feed output to the press at high-speed without comprising on quality; ScreenPro screening used with Global Graphics’ new Digital Print Quality Optimizer tool; Harlequin ColorPro™ for consistent and predicable color for a wide range of workflows including Esko; ProofScope a soft proofer to verify before print separations, cut marks, bar codes, colors, dimensions and density, and Mellow Colour digital print quality management software whose certification is demanded by the leading brands.

Global Graphics highlights the importance of software for digital inkjet presses at the Ink Jet Technology Showcase, Chicago

Global Graphics’ CTO Martin Bailey will discuss the importance of software when planning your inkjet press at the IMI Ink Jet Technology Showcase, which takes place on September 7th and 8th in Chicago.

Martin comments “The growth of the inkjet market brings new opportunities for both print companies and press vendors, but it’s not without its challenges. While brand managers and buyers are demanding high quality at high speed, inkjet press manufacturers are frustrated with output quality and are reaching the limits of what can be achieved with mechanical improvements.”

Martin continues “Intelligent software is as critical a component of your inkjet press as the print head, media, ink, fluid control, paper movement, or electronics. It has the power to resolve problems that can’t be resolved cost-effectively in hardware. It can also differentiate your press in the market and bring unique value to your users. Surprisingly, some press vendors spend little time upfront thinking about it. This talk will explore some of the issues involved and lay out what you need to know when your press is still on the drawing board.”

Martin Bailey’s session is entitled “Software is as important a component as any hardware” and will take place at The Ink Jet Technology Showcase http://www.inkjettechshowcase.com/ at 8.30 am on September 8th.

Korean market leader ships new office printers with Harlequin

Global Graphics’ embedded Harlequin RIP® has been chosen by Korean manufacturer Sindoh for a new range of multi-function office printers (MFPs) that will be sold in Korea, China, South Africa and the Middle East, with expansion into the European market already underway.

Sindoh is a total business solution enterprise that builds MFPs, copiers and software solutions to create a better office environment, is the dominant player in Korea and has plans for global expansion since establishing itself in the United States in 2012. Global Graphics is the developer of the Harlequin® RIP engine that provides high-performance rendering of page description languages for a wide range of printing devices from single function office printers to the latest generation of high-volume inkjet devices.

Models in Sindoh’s N400 and N600 mono series combine scanning, fax, mobile printing from Air print, NFC and Android mobile scan/print with either a 5 inch or 9 inch touch panel. They print at speeds of up to 45 pages per minute and use Harlequin, the industry’s highest performing renderer, to process page description languages (PDLs) including PCL XL, PCL 5e, PS, as well as PDF for direct printing. Global Graphics worked with its SoC (system on a chip) partner Marvell and Harlequin is embedded onto the Marvell 88PA6170 SoC designed for color and mono single function and multi-function printers that support scanning as well as multiple printing technologies.

Global Graphics provided URW++ font suites with the Harlequin RIP. All fonts are URW original designs and support the full Latin character complement. Additional fonts include character sets for Arabic and Hebrew.

ByoungBag Lee, Sindoh’s CTO said, "Integrating the new PDL emulation of the latest Harlequin Embedded software into Sindoh’s new A3 Mono MFP was undoubtedly a great decision. Sindoh is satisfied with Global Graphics’ proactive technical support and the improved performance of version 4.2 of Harlequin Embedded software, which ultimately led to a successful development of an affordable high speed A3 MFP of 45ppm to our customers. In addition, Sindoh was able to benefit from the continued partnership between Marvell’s SoC and Global Graphics’ PDL-emulation, which enabled us to apply a globalized standard technology and to achieve a quality standard that meets Sindoh’s expectations at a very competitive cost. Through close technical collaboration with Sindoh’s color printer / MFP product development with Global Graphics, we look forward to launching more competitive products in the future.”

Justin Bailey, Global Graphics’ VP of sales said, “We are delighted to count Sindoh among our customers and are pleased that they will benefit from the continual investments we make in our technology. Our ability to supply the industry’s fastest renderer on the latest generation of SoC through our partnership with Marvell, plus a package of URW++ fonts makes us a very compelling proposition for printer manufacturers because they can achieve their goals for speed and quality and keep the cost of their bill of materials under control. We wish Sindoh well in their global expansion.”

The embedded version of the Harlequin RIP is ported onto the embedded controller inside printing devices. Its architecture gives manufacturers flexibility and reduces their development costs and time to market.  Manufacturers can license one or any combination of page description languages – PCL 5C, PCL 5e, PCL 6, PS®, PDF and XPS – add their own or a third party’s color management or screening, have a wide choice of font options, and achieve high-performance even with low resource usage. It supports a wide range of SoCs and development environments.

New Bilingual Arabic-Latin font is a happy marriage

A new bilingual Arabic-Latin language typeface developed in response to the fast growing Arabic market has been unveiled by Global Graphics’ font foundry URW++.

Boutros-URW Franklin Gothic Arabic is the result of a unique collaboration between London-based Boutros™ which has specialised in Arabic fonts since 1966, and URW++ the designers of fonts for Mercedes Benz, Siemens, General Motors, Blizzard (Activision) and developers of the highly successful Latin face URW Franklin Gothic.

The new typeface is a happy marriage whereby the clean lines of the Latin URW Franklin Gothic Arabic have inspired the development of the Arabic companion typeface.

“The Arabic market has been fast-growing since the 1980s” says Mourad Boutros “and bilingual typefaces are in demand.  Our aim is to work with professional type foundries like URW++ that have successful Latin fonts.  We worked the Arabic font design around their Latin font and the result is a modern, aesthetically pleasing Arabic face available in four weights, light, book, medium and demi.”

“Bilingual fonts need to be visually compatible with each other” says Frank Steitiya of URW++.  “We took Boutros’ beautiful Arabic design and converted it into the OpenType/ TrueType Format.  We’ve also written supporting technical documentation so that it can be implemented successfully by graphic designers. It is suitable for virtually all communications from headlines to body copy in all bilingual Arabic-Latin languages.”

Boutros-URW Franklin Gothic Arabic is designed for maximum legibility, especially at small point sizes. The spaces between characters and between leadings have been condensed, giving high "x" heights and wider white areas. This has made the new typeface especially suitable for setting body text in manuals, directories, dictionaries and the like.

The new typeface is based upon the highly acclaimed Latin typeface Franklin Gothic which was designed in 1902 by Morris Fuller Benton. It was named after Benjamin Franklin, one of the most prolific American printers. Franklin Gothic has been widely used in press and advertising applications for more than a hundred years. While some minor adjustments have been necessary to accommodate digitisation and changes in printing techniques, Franklin Gothic remains one of the most successful fonts of all time.

Boutros-URW FranklinGothic Arabic is available from the URW++ font shop at http://bit.ly/2aNxQ9j as well as http://www.boutrosfonts.com/Boutros-URW-FGothicArabic.html.
