Graph Expo debut products from OKI Data Americas powered by Harlequin™

Global Graphics’ Harlequin RIP® has been chosen to drive four products – one of which sees its Graph Expo debut on the OKI Data Americas booth #4231.

The C711DW is a high-quality digital color label printer and finishing system for short-run commercial applications; it will make its Graph Expo debut. The pro511DW, part of an expanding series of commercial grade digital color printers, is a compact, affordable, and easy to operate web printer that produces high quality digital color labels with impressive speed and accuracy. The C941dn and C931dn – part of the C900 Series of production-quality, full color A3 devices – offer innovative features and functionality including impressive media handling capabilities. Both are supported by an optional Harlequin RIP. The C941dn includes an industry-first LED five station toner configuration, addition white or clear in the fifth position.

“Global Graphics has been a great partner to OKI Data, supplying the raster image processor (RIP) for our successful pro511DW digital label production system,” said Rich Egert, general manager of the strategic technology provider business group for OKI Data Americas. “As we expand our line of innovative production printers – including new continuous print and five color devices – Global Graphics continues to deliver leading-edge RIP solutions to power these units for the graphic arts and production market.”

The Harlequin RIP has been proven to be the fastest RIP technology available and the resulting productivity gains mean that print service providers can handle more jobs in a shift.  Critical for digital label production is its ability to provide pin sharp quality and dazzling color consistently across a wide range of workflows.  Harlequin ColorPro ™ provides excellent color process control and handles brand colors with ease because it includes look up tables for Pantone® colors.

Paul Hagen, VP of sales for Global Graphics Software the developers of the Harlequin RIP said, “we are thrilled to be expanding our relationship with OKI Data Americas as we work together more closely on a range of solutions destined to give print service providers a competitive edge.”

The Harlequin RIP is compliant with industry standards and compatible with a wide range of PDF creation tools.  It handles a wide range of files that would choke other workflows because of its ability to process multiple formats such as PDF, TIFF, JPEG, PostScript, EPS and XPS in one print engine.  Harlequin Dispersed Screening™ enables reproduction with greater sharpness even at relatively low resolutions.

Global Graphics launches Harlequin Partner Network

Cambridge (UK), 16th September, 2014: Global Graphics is launching its first ever formal partner program today to bring together the ecosystem of software developers whose products are designed to work with the Harlequin RIP.

The Harlequin Partner Network formally recognizes the growing community of third-party software developers whose products are used in the same print workflow as the Harlequin RIP or alongside it inside a Digital Front End.  There are hundreds of thousands of Harlequin RIP installations worldwide and the Partner Program is designed to maximize the value of the Harlequin RIP to those users.  It creates a framework for third-party vendors to develop and integrate their products more efficiently so giving print shops access to a broad workflow of products from multiple vendors.

Initial members include Pageflex, Color-Logic, Ultimate TechnoGraphics, Hamillroad Software, Bodoni Systems, Dynagram and Alwan. Global Graphics expects the network to expand steadily over time to include vendors of products used in newsprint and publishing, direct mail, packaging and wide format graphics:  “The Harlequin RIP has an extensive installed base worldwide, offering an extremely rewarding ecosystem for a business to develop and market add-on applications that are tied to the RIP”, notes Martin Bailey, Global Graphics Chief Technology Officer.

“There are already many third-party products designed to work with the Harlequin RIP that we are aware of but there could be many others who would benefit from joining. With the Harlequin Partner Network we are building a cooperative environment in which software developers can thrive. It offers companies the opportunity to learn, share, innovate and enjoy increased success”

Network members can request copies of the Harlequin RIP for use in their test labs, together with extensive documentation, and will receive alerts about upcoming releases and enhancements so that they can accelerate development of their own products. They will also have a limited amount of access to Global Graphics support teams and product management and the opportunity to influence and take part in co-marketing programs.

Members are permitted to display the Harlequin Partner Network logo on their web sites to indicate that they are a member of the program and a new section on the Global Graphics web site is dedicated to listing member products and news.

The partners already signed up for the program have expressed very strong support of the network.
“We are thrilled to part of the new Harlequin Partner Network,” says Leslie Wengenroth, Director of Marketing at Pageflex. “The Harlequin RIP is known throughout the industry for its robust architecture and excellent performance. There are numerous synergies between the Harlequin platform and our solutions for variable data composition, web-to-print, and multi-channel marketing, and we look forward to a productive relationship.”

“Over the last five or so years we have worked very closely with Global Graphics, especially with regards to the development of our Auraia DM screening product. The new Harlequin Partner Network program really does formalize and encapsulate the very real and tangible benefits of everything that we’ve experienced over those years,” comments Andy Cave, CEO, Hamillroad Software. “In my opinion, if you have an idea for a product that would enhance a RIP, no matter how large or small, there is no other RIP in the world that you should look at, or company you should talk to when deciding your route to market.”

“Ultimate is glad to join Global Graphics new partner program and get to know the new developments first-hand”, said Joanne David, President/CEO of Ultimate TechnoGraphics. “We are leveraging the nice Harlequin architecture with our high-volume solution called Impostrip Scalable used in large RIP farms such as the HP Ultra Print Server and we are looking forward to see where this closed partnership will take us next.”

According to Mark Geeves, Color-Logic Director of Sales and Marketing: “Color-Logic is pleased to be among the initial Harlequin partners.  The Harlequin RIP is among the most advanced in the industry.  We have been working to ensure that with the Harlequin RIP and Color-Logic technology, OEMs ensure their digital print customers can use white ink on metallic substrates and eliminate the onerous task of creating white ink masks.”

Companies who wish to join the Harlequin Partner Network can do so by visiting the website at www.globalgraphics.com/harlequin-partner-network , or by contacting Martin Bailey at martin.bailey@globalgraphics.com

Print shops using Harlequin technology – there are estimated to be hundreds of thousands of active installations world-wide – will be able to look up which technology is complementary to their RIP from the list of partners and their products on the Global Graphics web site.

Flexo screen launch enables new quality standards

Eede, The Netherlands, September 11th, 2014 – Recent development work between ThermoFlexX and Global Graphics has resulted in new hybrid screens for the flexo market that allow greatly improved highlights to be achieved in the final printed product. The screens are aimed in particular at the label sector and will have their worldwide launch at Labelexpo Americas 2014 on the Xeikon stand (6135).

“Great strides have been made over recent years in the quality that can be achieved in the flexo process, with major advances taking place in the areas of pre-press, platemaking and printing,” says Christophe Lievens, director sales and marketing for basysPrint and ThermoFlexX. “But there are still quality hurdles that have to be jumped.

“ThermoFlexX has been working to create a complete high-quality packaging workflow and this has involved the formation of strategic partnerships with several other leading players. Our recent collaboration with Global Graphics, combining their extensive knowledge of commercial print with our many years of experience in packaging, is already proving extremely fruitful.

“Global Graphics has set the industry standard for years with its PDF native Harlequin RIP and its leading position in RIP technology, screening and color management, made it the obvious partner for ThermoFlexX, which is now pioneering digital imaging for the flexo market. The new hybrid screens are based on Harlequin cross modulated screens, and utilise a combination of FM screening to handle highlights and AM screening to handle shadow and mid-tones in a unique way and we look forward to showing these astounding results to visitors at Labelexpo Americas.”

The ‘no-nonsense’ approach taken to the design of the screens means they are very easy to set up. They can be used with the new Harlequin MultiRIP (v10) and are able to take full advantage of the 5,080 dpi resolution available on ThermoFlexX imagers, which is the highest resolution on the market. This enables the creation of the most effectively shaped minimum dots and these remain stable throughout platemaking and printing. The ability to produce such small, consistent dots reduces significantly the risk of a ‘grainy effect’ on the final printed product. This latest development enables the best print quality comparable to offset, but with the lower production costs associated with flexo.

The hybrid screens allow the formation of excellent vignettes that can fade to zero, while also providing a larger color space plus greater contrast and more uniform dot-bridging. They enable higher screen rulings to be used, giving smooth, noise-free flat tints while retaining fine details in highlights. Breakouts in images are also less visible, resulting in the reduction or even elimination of subsequent image retouching.

These hybrid screens, which are the first of what are expected to be several product launches following this new joint development, are available from ThermoFlexX as well as two Global Graphics OEM partners – Hybrid Software and Xitron.

“The Harlequin RIP is well known for its excellent PDF interpretation, the quality of its rendering, color management and screening engine as well as its speed,” says Martin Bailey, CTO, Global Graphics Software. “The RIPs have been continually fine-tuned over 25 years in production and this includes separating for rich and custom process ink sets, with and without multiple spot colors.

“We’re delighted to have had the opportunity to work with ThermoFlexX to deliver these new hybrid screens, building on our existing screening engine and their hands-on expertise and understanding of the detailed requirements of flexo printers. We’re looking forward to further co-operation with ThermoFlexX in the future.”
