Global Graphics launches version 3.0 of popular Jaws® RIP

A new release of the Jaws® RIP, launched today by Global Graphics Software, contains a host of new features for wide format, specialty printing and software applications, and gives performance increases averaging up to  500% over its predecessor.

The Jaws RIP is used extensively by leading industry players such as Wasatch, Onyx, Quark, Pitney Bowes and Canon Finetech, and for applications as diverse as wide and grand format output, textile, ceramic and silkscreen printing, high-speed file conversion, and PDF creation.  More than 5 million copies of the Jaws RIP have shipped to users worldwide since 2000 when Global Graphics bought this technology from 5D.

New in Jaws 3.0 are 64-bit memory management, dynamic memory management and multi-threaded architecture which, combined, make this new version the fastest ever with performance improvements of between 300% and 500% over the previous version.  Other new features include improved transparency tiling and optimized blending for faster processing, enhanced support for ICC color correction and improved font handling and compatibility.

Kendal Madsen, director of engineering, Onyx Graphics, Inc. says, “Onyx Graphics is a market leader in the large format printing industry.  Key to the success of Onyx has been the use of the Jaws RIP engine which we use for both PostScript and PDF file processing.  Our customers have come to rely on the quality, consistency, and reliability produced by the Jaws RIP.   I have been impressed through the years at the ease at which we are able to integrate each new update of the Jaws engine into our product.  We are currently implementing Jaws 3 and are excited to take advantage of the new multi-threaded capabilities.”

Michael Ware, president of Wasatch Computer Technology, LLC, said, "We have been using the Jaws RIP core since 1993. We find it to be fast and highly functional. One of the reasons we have stayed with Jaws and Global Graphics for nearly 20 years is their commitment to service and their continued enhancement of the Jaws product line."

Larry Spevak, the president ColorBurst Systems uses the Jaws RIP as the basis for the Overdrive RIP that can drive any inkjet printer. He comments “our OverDrive 2 product uses Jaws 3.0 for a range of rendering functions from driving the output to creating thumbnails and previews. The benefits of Jaws 3.0 are significant speed increase for jobs, especially when they are rotated in the RIP. Additionally, there’s better support for live transparencies for handling complex files from InDesign & Illustrator.”

The Jaws RIP is compact and fast and has an open architecture that gives OEMs and application developers the flexibility to implement a wide range of their own choice of features including third-party screening and color management across Windows, Mac and Linux.

  • Omzet van 2,4 miljoen euro voor dit kwartaal (of 2,2 miljoen euro tegen Q2 2011 wisselkoersen) t.o.v. 2,1 miljoen euro in Q2 2011;
  • Bedrijfsverlies van 0,1 miljoen euro voor dit kwartaal t.o.v. een nominale bedrijfswinst in Q2 2011;
  • Nominaal aangepast bedrijfsverlies voor dit kwartaal t.o.v. een aangepast bedrijfsverlies van 0,2 miljoen euro in Q2 2011;
  • Nominaal aangepast verlies vóór belastingen voor dit kwartaal (of een aangepast verlies vóór belastingen van 0,00 euro per aandeel) t.o.v. een aangepast bedrijfsverlies vóór belastingen van 0,2 miljoen euro in Q2 2011 (of een aangepast verlies vóór belastingen van 0,02 euro per aandeel);
  • Nettoverlies van 0,1 miljoen euro voor dit kwartaal (of een nettoverlies van 0,01 euro per aandeel), net als in Q2 2011;

Harlequin RIP used in ground-breaking cloud solution to measure ink intensity

The Harlequin RIP has been chosen by Technesis, the developers of PrintControlOnline, a cloud based print management application, to provide a ground-breaking product for printer and copier manufacturers to assist in managing print contracts more effectively. The new online product will enable manufacturers to accurately manage ink and toner usage remotely from their SmartPhone, tablet or lap top, facilitating better cost per page service on their managed devices.

An embedded version of the Harlequin “digital” RIP combined with Technesis’ Color Intensity Engine technology tracks the intensity of ink and toner used in any print stream across any print device.  It is expected to be available from Q4 2012.

Commenting on the agreement, Jon Baker, vice president of Technesis said, “leveraging the Harlequin RIP from Global Graphics enables us to take the MPS proposition to the next level. Tracking ink and toner coverage intensity is as critical as tracking the actual click. That coverage variable determines the cost of the print. If it can’t be measured accurately it can’t be managed effectively.”

Ron Iversen, vice president of field operations for Global Graphics said, “we are very excited about the use of our Harlequin RIP technology as an engine for calculating accurate ink usage which will allow enterprises and print providers to better manage print resources with a very accurate print pricing/costing model”.

Global Graphics broadens relationship with HP

The Harlequin RIP has been chosen by HP to drive the new range of HP Print Module Solutions, expanding Global Graphics’ strategic relationship with HP under which the company currently supplies the RIP technologies to drive the HP Indigo range as well as the HP inkjet web press range.

The HP M500, C500, M800, and C800 Print Module Systems are designed for easy integration into conventional analogue presses and finishing lines.  They enable print service providers to place digital content precisely where they need it in the workflow by imprinting variable data onto partially printed templates produced on offset devices.

“The Print Module systems help our customers do work inexpensively and produce more effective campaigns”, comments Holt Mebane, distinguished technologist at HP Graphics Solutions Business. “If you’ve got a long run with a small amount of variable data it’s cost-effective to use a hybrid system and in doing so you also gain by extending the life of your analogue press.

“The speed of the RIP driving the system is extremely important so choosing Harlequin was an easy decision.  The RIP speed needs to outperform the speed of the press to maximize the efficiency by removing time waiting for jobs to become ready for printing. The performance and scalability of the Harlequin RIP technology provides the perfect solution to this challenge.

”We’ve found another advantage of choosing Harlequin is the color fidelity achieved with the in-RIP color management, which is especially important for printing logos.”

The Harlequin RIP is scalable so when print service providers decide to add more print modules and want more power they can add more RIPs. Expansion packs can take print service providers from an entry level system where the RIPs run on either a PC tower or a rack mounted server.

The HP C800 Print Module System was shown on the HP stand at drupa printing full color, variable data duplex at 244m/800ft per minute onto pre-printed templates produced on an offset press.

HP Print Module systems can be placed in-line or off-line, wherever is most convenient for the print service provider’s workflow.  For example in roll to roll they can be placed just ahead of finishing at the end of the line by locating the output roll slightly further down the line.

Speechly Bircham rolls out electronic binder for matter review and closing bibles

City law firm Speechly Bircham has licensed Global Graphics gDoc Binder software to facilitate electronic matter review and file tracking.  gDoc Binder, which is an electronic version of a paper binder, will be rolled out to 100 fee earners next month in phase 1 of a project that is being implemented by software development firm, RBRO Solutions, and should see Robert Cohen, Speechly’s IT director, begin to realise his vision of making easy to use software available to legal practitioners who typically face a limited choice of products. RBRO Solutions was instrumental in developing key integrations between Speechly’s Document Management System and gDoc Binder to create a customized version of gDoc Binder, RBRO Binder Professional.

“Reviewing an entire matter electronically has been difficult” says Cohen.  “Most electronic document management systems have their emphasis on data imputing and not review yet fee earners are expected to keep control of every item coming in and out of an electronic file.  All law firms have an obligation to ensure matter files are complete. So an efficient method of file review is an important consideration for legal firms today, especially when so many different types of information can be involved in cases, including scanned information, emails, documents, faxes, financial information and more.

“gDoc Binder makes it easy to review and track an entire matter in a completely natural way because it is based on the familiar paper binder concept that has worked in the legal sector for centuries.  I’ve been looking for an electronic file that you can flick through and mark up for years but there’s been nothing available until now.”

gDoc Binder is an electronic binder with tabs to sub-divide information and an index that automatically updates as documents are added. Documents that originate in many different formats can be brought together and organized into the binder and sticky notes and annotations can be added. Content can be secured with 256-bit AES encryption and digitally signed.  Binders can be used off-line as a mobile and secure package giving legal teams greater flexibility when collaborating on projects especially when travelling or working from home.

 “To be most productive you need an easy to digest format and this is especially so when you are travelling. says Cohen, “  With Binder you can work on files on the airplane or train on your mobile device and then connect your updates back with the office for your team to act on your instructions. I’m looking forward to a reduction in IT support calls because watching people using Binder is rather like giving  someone an iPad for the first time, they instinctively know what to do.”

In the Speechly Bircham binder legal teams can launch Office applications from any point within the binder to draft memos or other correspondence, without losing their place in the binder.

In Phase 2 of the project, Cohen is aiming to add other features such as the ability to attach a dictation file to the binder.

Canon EDICOLOR powered by Jaws

Global Graphics‘ Jaws RIP and PDF technology remain at the heart of version 10 of Canon IT Solutions’ EDICOLOR page-layout application launched today.

EDICOLOR, which now supports the eBook file format ePUB 3.0, is used extensively by creative professionals in the printing, publishing and newspaper industry in Japan.

With this launch Canon is looking to extend the product to entry level users who need the EDICOLOR layout software to design pages for mobile devices, including smartphones and tablets, by offering it at a substantially discounted price for a limited period.

Global Graphics and Canon worked closely together to maximise the cost and performance benefit of the new version.

Jaws RIP and PDF technology makes it possible for EDICOLOR users to  create and print PDF files directly from within the application without the need to purchase a third party PDF creation tool.   Jaws technology also enables users to make high-precision adjustment to page layouts by displaying high-resolution EPS images on screen.

Canon IT Solutions require high-quality PDF input/output with a fast processing speed: EDICOLOR’s image processing and print output engines are both based on PostScript® and because EDICOLOR users create PDF destined for professional printing it is essential that the PDF creation process does not lose the CMYK data attributes in the PostScript data.

Global Graphics has been working with Canon IT Solutions since 2005 when Canon chose to use the Jaws PDF technology for PDF creation because in performance tests they found its speed was faster than any other PDF creation tool. The high-quality of the PDF file was also a key factor.

Revealed at drupa: Independent speed tests confirm sheer power and consistency of the new Harlequin “digital” RIP

  • delivers pages at over 20 times the rate required by the leading label press or 11 times faster than the leading full-color cut-sheet device using one RIP
  • plenty of head room to keep presses running at full speed even on complex or badly constructed jobs

Independent speed tests carried out by the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) on the latest release of the new generation Harlequin RIP®, show that it delivers pages far in excess of the rated speeds of the industry’s highest performing digital presses.

The results, published today at drupa in a new White Paper authored by InfoTrends, confirm that the Harlequin Host Renderer has so much processing speed that it not only reduces the risk of poorly constructed jobs slowing down production but exceeds industry requirements in keeping presses running at full speed.  This amount of power has benefits for press manufacturers in potentially reducing their bill of materials for the digital front ends driving presses. It benefits print shops by providing a faster return on press investment and future-proofing their operation against the accelerating trend towards personalization of data.

The tests were conducted by RIT’s School of Media, under the auspices of Administrative Chair and Gannett Distinguished Professor, Chris Bondy. The test file suite, developed by RIT, comprised files created using Adobe InDesign, Quark XPress, XMPie and GMC, selected to provide a good representation of the standard production tools used to create static and variable data pages for six sample categories –  label printing, direct mail, transactional printing, commercial printing, publications and photo books.

“The global digitization of all content is driving the use of more imagery and personalized content in all printed material”, says Chris Bondy. “Print service providers world-wide are interested to see how enhancements in software architecture, coupled with the latest computing systems, can efficiently and accurately deliver pages to a digital press.   That’s why Global Graphics asked us to develop an independent test suite and conduct a RIP processing test that represents the range of printing markets served by digital print.”

The headline results, reported in full in the White Paper, have significant implications for the digital printing industry:

  • manufacturers of light and medium production devices can reduce time to market by using a single RIP;
  • vendors of high and ultra-high volume devices can minimize the costs of their DFE using multiple RIPs.

The speed tests show that the Harlequin Host Renderer delivers:

  • Label printing
    • Over 20 times the rate required by the leading label press using one RIP;
  • Transactional/direct mail (variable data printing)
    • 4 times faster than the rate required by the  leading continuous feed color devices using a server with 10 RIPs
    • 5 times faster than the leading toner cut-sheet color devices using one RIP;
  • Commercial (assuming a minimum run length of  20 copies)
    • 11 times faster than the rate required by the leading full-color, cut-sheet device
    • 20 times faster than the rate required by high-end MFP cut-sheet color devices using one RIP;
  • Publication (assuming a minimum run length of 20 copies)
    • 11 times faster than the rate required by an ultra-high volume wide-web inkjet press with a server of 10 RIPs;
    • 24 times faster than the rate required by a medium volume, full-color graphic arts production press with one RIP.

 “The high-speed inkjet printing market is expected to grow phenomenally in terms of speed, width and productivity which will put tremendous requirements on the RIP”, says Kaspar Roos, associate director, InfoTrends.  “Global Graphics has highly efficient, scalable and robust technology to play in this market.  OEMs developing high-speed, high-volume printing equipment should consider adding Global Graphics to their evaluation list when sourcing RIP technology.”

The Harlequin Host Renderer provides high performance components with which to build Digital Front Ends for digital production presses. A number of new features in Version 3 increase processing power so that pages pass through the RIP at a faster pace than ever before:

  • Harlequin Parallel Pages™ allows the RIP to interpret one page while it’s still rendering the previous one. This allows print shops to take maximum advantage of multi-core computers.
  • Harlequin VariData™ accelerates the processing time of regular PDF files containing variable data including, but not only, PDF/VT files.
  • The Harlequin Host Renderer is also available as a 64-bit build to access additional memory when it’s needed for pages with large amounts of data.

Press manufacturers at drupa who use Harlequin to drive their digital presses include HP Indigo, and HP inkjet web division ( Hall 4/D60), Tokyo Kikai Seisakusho ( Hall 15/B55) and Miyakoshi Printing Machinery (Hall 9/A04).
