Harlequin web portal launches to Graph Expo visitors – latest version of Harlequin RIP also on show

Global Graphics’ new interactive community and online store for Harlequin RIP® users at www.harlequin.com is being launched to the US market at Graph Expo.   Also demonstrated on the Global Graphics’ booth will be the Harlequin PLUS Server RIP (v.8.0), the first graphic arts RIP to natively process PDF, PostScript®, and XPS in a single RIP engine.

Harlequin.com provides a comprehensive range of RIP-related information for the Harlequin user including FAQs, White Papers, technical datasheets and a peer-to-peer forum.  It makes it easy for pre-press operations and print shops to evaluate and purchase products that will add new features to their RIP for increased productivity. Most products are available for evaluation free-of-charge for 30 days so that users can ‘try before they buy’ ( see separate press release about Harlequin Cross Modulated Screening).  Harlequin.com also provides a service to match users who may have lost touch with their original supplier and who want to upgrade their current RIP, or buy a new RIP, with a new supplier in the Global Graphics’ OEM network. The site is backed by Xitron, Compose, Fusion Systems, HighWater, ECRM, RTI, Presstek and Polkadots who provide technical support to purchasers of Harlequin products.

The JDF-enabled Harlequin PLUS Server RIP (v.8.0) is the first graphic arts RIP to process natively PDF, PostScript and XPS in one engine so that print shops don’t need to worry about how they receive files from their customers, and how they need to process those files because they can print multiple file formats with a consistent high-quality result.  The Harlequin RIP has rendered PDF natively since 1997, introducing support for transparency in 2002 with Version 6.0 of the RIP so there is no need to flatten transparent artwork.

The Harlequin PLUS Server RIP provides faster processing speeds than its predecessors, notably through multi-threaded rendering that helps remove RIP bottlenecks in handling raster data and takes full advantage of the new Duo and Quad core technology.  A new retained PDF raster feature speeds up variable data processing by only RIPping new content on multi-page jobs so that the same areas are not processed repeatedly. From a host of other new features introduced in v.8.0 highlights include: support for PDF 1.7, the PDF/X-4 specification, as well as JDF 1.3; support for the HD Photo format, a new file format for continuous tone still images that surpasses the limitations of existing image formats with superior compression capabilities and extended dynamic range, a soft-proofing feature that allows the print service provider to quickly create a PDF that represents exactly how a job will appear on press for customer approvals and compatibility with PANTONE® Goe™

In 2008 The Harlequin RIP celebrates the twentieth anniversary of its first use in a commercial system.

Global Graphics announces the HXM screening module for the Harlequin RIP is available for evaluation

Today at Graph Expo, Global Graphics announced the addition of the HXM™ (Harlequin Cross-Modulated) screening module to the range of products available to evaluate by the interactive community of Harlequin RIP users at the online store at www.harlequin.com. HXM, which is supplied as a Screening Option upgrade to the Harlequin RIP, uses hybrid screening to improve print quality by increasing the output lines per inch (LPI)  at lower resolutions.

Harlequin RIP users are able to download the HXM installer for a free 30-day trial to evaluate its suitability for their purposes. There is no commitment to buy, and after evaluation, users are free to choose whether or not to purchase the product via their preferred Harlequin RIP dealer or reseller.

“HXM significantly improves the printing quality and therefore opens up more print sales opportunities,” says Ralph Lloyd, VP of product marketing at Global Graphics. “If you are resizing images you are going to lose detail, especially in the highlight and shadow areas. With HXM you don’t lose that detail and the sharpness and quality are retained. It also widens the variety of paper choices available and all of this means the ability to attract high end work and high end profit.”

HXM screening is a solution which addresses the issue of the need to print on lower quality or recycled papers to control cost, yet at the same time fulfill the high expectations of the customer.  Its use of hybrid screening allows the enlargement or reduction of images without affecting quality or detail. In fact, it can significantly improve the print quality with smoother flesh tones, flat tints and gradient transitions. This is achieved by controlling the dot size in the highlight and shadow, ensuring it is does not disappear in the light areas or merge in the dark areas.

As HXM is a combination of traditional AM screening with FM screening, it eliminates the problem of moiré by using higher screen rulings than 150 LPI, but without the risk of loss of quality. For example, if a printer is currently imaging plates at 2400 DPI with output at 150 LPI, and is able to hold a 1% dot when printing on the required substrate, by using HXM screens it would be possible to print at 200-250 LPI without any special pre-press or on-press requirements.

Printers need not worry about compatibility with their equipment as HXM screens are pre-tuned, created and encrypted to match most OEM’s presses, plates, paper, chemistry and RIP settings combinations.

Having products such as HXM available for evaluation and purchase at harlequin.com is proving to be an essential resource for the two hundred thousand Harlequin RIP users worldwide. The obligation-free trial period gives users the freedom to explore thoroughly the opportunities and resources on offer.

The Harlequin RIP® was first used in a production system in 1988 and is used to power a vast number of operations and printing devices including CtP, proofers, short-run print, wide format print, and PDF workflows applications. It has processed PostScript® natively since 1988, PDF natively since 1997 and is the first commercially available graphic arts RIP to natively process files in the new XPS print format (XML Paper Specification) available with Windows® VistaTM. Native processing of file formats renders files more accurately and speedily because there is no conversion to an intermediary format. Native processing of files means there is no need to flatten transparencies in artwork.

Harlequin RIP special offer announced for Graph Expo

Global Graphics has announced a Harlequin RIP® special offer to coincide with Graph Expo.  If visitors buy or upgrade their Harlequin RIP to the most recent version – the Harlequin PLUS Server RIP (v.8.0) – they can earn up to 25% discount off all complementary Harlequin RIP products.  The offer runs until 30 November and anyone requesting an upgrade to their RIP via harlequin.com, the interactive community and online store for Harlequin RIP users, will also receive Global Graphics’ award winning Jaws PDF Creator® free of charge.

“We believe that the Harlequin RIP is already the best value tool on the market for pre-press and digital printing,” says Paul Hagen, Global Graphics’ director of RIP sales. “The products that are on special offer save time and money by offering additional enhancements to the RIP. For example, our simple imposition for two-up and four-up conventional and digital print provides an extremely cost effective imposition tool integrated into the RIP for small and medium format output devices.

“The Harlequin RIP makes economic sense in many other ways too”, he continues: “the same RIP can be used for proofing, outputting to CtP or to your digital press and wide format printer.  This reduces operating and training costs while insuring consistency in output .  Also, with the Harlequin RIP print shops don’t need to worry about how they receive files from their customers, and how they need to process those files because the Harlequin PLUS Server RIP processes PostScript®, XPS and PDF files natively in one RIP engine so you can print multiple file formats with a consistent high-quality result.  Printers don’t need to flatten transparencies either because the Harlequin RIP has handled live transparency since Version 6.0 in 2002.”

For details of the special offer print shops should either register to upgrade their  RIP at www.harlequin.com or contact their preferred dealer or reseller.

  • Omzet van 2,9 miljoen euro dit kwartaal (3,2 miljoen euro tegen wisselkoersen van het derde kwartaal 2007) vergeleken met 3,5 miljoen euro in het derde kwartaal 2007;
  • Bedrijfswinst van 0,1 miljoen euro voor dit kwartaal, vergeleken met 0,9 miljoen euro in het derde kwartaal 2007;
  • Aangepaste bedrijfswinst van 0,1 miljoen euro voor dit kwartaal, vergeleken met 0,3 miljoen euro in het derde kwartaal 2007;
  • Aangepaste winst vóór belastingen van nominale waarde voor dit kwartaal (of een winst van 0,0 euro per aandeel) vergeleken met een aangepaste winst vóór belastingen van 0,3 miljoen euro (of 0,03 euro per aandeel), voor het derde kwartaal 2007;
  • Nettoverlies van nominale waarde voor dit kwartaal (of een verlies van 0,00 euro per aandeel), vergeleken met een nettowinst van 0,5 miljoen euro in het derde kwartaal 2007 (of 0,05 euro per aandeel);

Gary Fry, chief executive officer stated, "Whilst it is encouraging to see an increase in revenue and a return to operating profit from the previous quarter we still need to develop significant growth for the business. We are up from Euro 2.6 million in Q2 2008 to Euro 2.9 million in this quarter. The main difference between Q3 2007 and Q3 2008 arises from the revenue recognition accredited to three deals which were signed in November 2006. Whilst we have not yet been adversely affected by the recent global economic crisis we do remain cautious as to the impact that this could have on the industry as a whole.

“In my first full quarter as CEO for Global Graphics I am delighted to report that we have been successful in signing four new contracts across all lines of our business and, looking forward, the pipeline is encouraging.  I am pleased by what I have discovered during my first quarter and I am confident about the long-term outlook for Global Graphics.”

Third quarter performance
Sales for the quarter amounted to Euro 2.9 million, compared with Euro 3.5 million in the third quarter 2007, or a decrease of 19.2% at current exchange rates.  The sequential decrease in sales with the third quarter of 2007 results firstly from the difference between the amount of revenue recognized in both quarters with regards to the three contracts announced in November 2006 amounting to Euro 0.4 million, and secondly from the impact of adverse exchange rate fluctuations, for a total of Euro 0.3 million, the average Euro/US dollar rate falling to 1.505 in Q3 2008 compared with 1.377 in Q3 2007.

Total operating expenses amounted to Euro 2.7 million this quarter, as in Q2 2008, and compared with Euro 2.5 million in Q3 2007.

The Company reported an operating profit of Euro 0.1 million this quarter (or 3.0% of the quarter’s sales), compared with Euro 0.9 million in Q3 2007 (or 25.3% of Q3 2007 sales).

First nine months performance
Sales for the first nine months of 2008 were Euro 8.4 million, compared with Euro 12.9 million in the same period of 2007, or a decrease of 34.6% at current exchange rates.  The sequential decrease in sales with the first nine months of 2007 results firstly from the difference between the amount of revenue recognized with regards to the three contracts announced in November 2006 amounting to a total of Euro 2.7 million and secondly from adverse exchange rate fluctuations, for a total of Euro 1.0 million, the average Euro/US dollar rate falling to an average of 1.521 in the first nine months of 2008 compared with an average of 1.343 for the same period of 2007.

Total operating expenses amounted to Euro 8.1 million for the first nine months of 2008, compared with Euro 8.4 million for the same period of 2007.  Included in operating expenses for the first nine months of 2008 were non-recurring expenses amounting to a total of Euro 0.5 million which related to costs incurred with regards to the change in the Chief Executive Officer position which occurred in late June 2008, and also with respect of the redundancy programme which was implemented in January 2008.

Accordingly, adjusted net EPS was a loss of Euro 0.02 per share for the first nine months of 2008, compared with a profit of Euro 0.21 per share for the same period of 2007.

Financial position at 30 September 2008

Full year 2008 outlook
Gary Fry added: “During Q4 we will be further refining our long term strategy for growth.   We are also engaged in various new business opportunities across the range of the Global Graphics’    portfolio that will deliver results in the longer term. I confirm the view that our full year position is line with the outlook that we have given in previous statements.

Global Graphics selected to demonstrate performance capabilities of advanced MPC8536 processor from Freescale Semiconductor

Global Graphics’ embedded software is running on Freescale Semiconductor’s MPC8536E PowerQUICC® III processor at the Freescale Technology Forum in Japan to show the high-performance that it is possible to achieve in next-generation printing devices by combining a single core processor with Global Graphics’ powerful Harlequin PLUS Embedded technology. Freescale introduced the MPC8536E device today at the event.

Measuring interpretation and rendering speeds against the popular JEITA test files, the demonstration achieves speeds in excess of 70 ppm (CMYK 1 bit per pixel).   Global Graphics is also making a technology presentation to show how further performance gains are possible with multi-core processing, underlining the breadth of single and multi-core solutions and price points available to peripheral manufacturers.

“We are pleased to work with Global Graphics to help meet the demanding requirements of next generation multifunction printing technology” said Don Shin, senior marketing analyst for Freescale Semiconductor’s Networking Systems Division.  “By pairing the MPC8536E processor with Harlequin PLUS Embedded technology, OEMs can create advanced, high performance printing products that deliver the features and functionality required for success in today’s competitive MFP markets.”

The demonstration uses Global Graphics’ Evaluation Kit for the Harlequin PLUS Embedded SDK  that allows printer manufacturers to evaluate performance on different Run Time Operating Systems and hardware platforms.  In this demonstration the Harlequin PLUS Embedded RIP is outputting 1-bit screened CMYK color raster at 600dpi, and 8-bit CMYK contone color raster at 600dpi.  The MPC8536DS board is configured to run its CPU at 1.5GHz (1500 MHz Core / 500 MHz CCB / 667 MHz Async DDR).

The Harlequin PLUS Embedded SDK provides fast and efficient support for multiple Page Description Language formats, including PostScript Language Levels 1, 2 and 3, PCL 5e/5c/XL, PDF 1.0 – 1.7 and XPS  across a wide range of embedded controller architectures and operating systems while enabling the printer manufacturer to achieve low costs and rapid time to market.

The Harlequin PLUS Embedded SDK offers a compact and efficient software kernel with a modular architecture that enables small footprint and low memory operation. These characteristics, combined with highly configurable support for multiple PDL formats and sophisticated graphics and color handling routines, present a software solution that is suitable for a wide range of devices and whose extensive configuration options facilitate integration with printer controller software.

Flexible application programming interfaces allow for easy integration of OEM or third-party intellectual property including color management, font handling, and screening or compression/decompression technology.    A scalable consumption solution enables peripheral manufacturers to add native XPS rendering on the printer controller board while minimizing the resources on that device.

Global Graphics debuts new generation of electronic document solutions at DMS

Global Graphics is previewing its powerful new solution for creating document and print management systems at DMS in the PDF/A Competence Centre (Hall 7, Stand G 059).  The eDocument Library™ will be shown in a transactional processing application, assembling documents combining variable data and content from templates, and converting them to different document formats to illustrate the ease with which eDocument Library can be configured to support business processes, such as integrating with databases, accounting systems and producing personalized customer communication.

“eDocument Library has been developed with quality, accuracy and performance in mind”, says James Bidewell, Global Graphics’ director of eDocument sales. “ Not only can you create applications that can convert in and out of multiple document formats and faithfully retain the appearance and characteristics of the source document, but eDocument Library can generate documents quickly and process vast quantities of information at great speed, up to several hundred documents per second, distributed over multiple servers.”

Desktop and dynamic publishing expert Quark has already announced that it intends to base new features in forthcoming products on eDocument Library. Media technology specialist Dainippon Screen has launched a new application in Japan that is based on eDocument Library and allows office users to flip through the pages of multiple electronic documents on their computer monitor, just like turning the pages of a book, without the need to launch application software to view the files.

eDocument Library is a framework for document manipulation, analysis and conversion, designed to enable a very wide variety of applications that need to interact with electronic document formats.  eDocument Library can be used to build applications that:

  • Create simple documents from database records, tracking and logging applications and other data sources
  • Programmatically create more complex, template-based documents for customized document delivery, whether that is part of a database report generator, an on-line information portal or a kiosk. Pages can be saved as PDF, PDF/A, PDF/X or XPS.
  • Integrate with scanning applications

Or simply to:

  • Convert documents from one format into another, for example if you need to process files submitted from outside your organization
  • Provide batch conversions into PDF/A for archiving purposes
  • Convert files as part of a migration process
  • Convert files for submission to another organization, such as a government agency

The engine at the heart of the eDocument Library is powerful enough to provide multiple file format conversions.  Any number of Page Description Languages can be added including PDF, PostScript®, PCL, XPS, proprietary formats, and open standards such as PDF/A and PDF/X.  With eDocument Library the application developer also has unprecedented access to page-level and object-level information. Via the comprehensive Application Programming Interface eDocument Library offers complete access to and manipulation of the objects, parameters and metadata of a document during the conversion process, including text, images, fonts, color space.  Page-level access to documents is also possible including page orientation, bookmarks, annotations, thumbnails and page labeling.

eDocument Library will be used as the underlying technology for a range of new turnkey enterprise applications.  For further information please contact sales@globalgraphics.com or Global Graphics’ distributors Actino GmbH ( info@actino.de ) and Lenzinger GmbH (sales@lenzinger.net).

Global Graphics is a long-standing advocate of industry standards, sitting on numerous international standards bodies.   Martin Bailey, Global Graphics’ chief technology officer is the primary UK representative on ISO PDF/A committee.

Global Graphics reports second quarter and half year 2008 results

GLOBAL GRAPHICS SA (NYSE-Euronext: GLOG), a world leading developer of technology for open document and print solutions, announces financial results for the second quarter and the first six months of the year ending 31 December 2008.

Comparisons for the second quarter of 2008 with the second quarter of the previous year include:

  • Sales of Euro 2.6 million this quarter (Euro 2.9 million at Q2 07 exchange rates) compared with Euro 4.4 million in Q2 2007;
  • Operating loss of Euro 0.3 million this quarter compared with an operating profit of Euro 1.4 million in Q2 2007;
  • Adjusted operating loss of Euro 0.2 million this quarter compared with an adjusted operating profit of Euro 0.8 million in Q2 2007;
  • Adjusted pre-tax loss of Euro 0.2 million this quarter (or a loss of Euro 0.02 per share) compared with an adjusted pre-tax profit of Euro 0.8 million in Q2 2007 (or a profit of Euro 0.08 per share);
  • Net loss of Euro 0.5 million this quarter (or a loss of Euro 0.05 per share) compared with a net profit of Euro 1.4 million in Q2 2007 (or a profit of Euro 0.14 per share); and
  • Adjusted net loss of Euro 0.5 million this quarter (or a loss of Euro 0.05 per share) compared with an adjusted net profit of Euro 1.1 million in Q2 07 (or a profit of Euro 0.10 per share).

Commenting on performance, Johan Volckaerts, Chairman, said: “These results are certainly disappointing. The background is that economic conditions, particularly in the United States, continue to be challenging. Industry consolidation in the graphic arts segment and exchange rate fluctuations between the US dollar and the Euro continue to affect us.  However, the main factor that has had a sharp impact on these results is the difference in revenue recognition between Q207 and Q208 resulting from the three contracts we signed in November 2006. In Q207 we recognised Euro 1.3 million from these contracts and in Q208 only Euro 0.2 million, hence a sequential variance of Euro 1.1 million for the quarter and of Euro 2.3 million for the first six months of 2008.

“However, it is obvious that new business has not materialised in the timeframe that we expected, and that this has been responsible for the declining trend in our revenues.  Under Gary Fry’s leadership, we plan to reverse this trend although we do not expect to achieve this within the next few quarters.  Nevertheless, the opportunities for closing new deals with potential digital print and electronic document customers still exist and our negotiations continue with major players.”
